It should not be construed to indicate that use of the drug is safe, appropriate, or effective for you. Consult your healthcare professional before using this drug.

APPETITE SUPPRESSANTS - ORAL

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Tenuate, Tenuate Dospan

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Diethylpropion 1-Phenyl-2-Diethylamino-1-Propanone hydrochloride

BONTRIL USES: This medication is used in combination with a diet plan to help you reduce weight.

HOW TO USE: Take on an empty stomach, once daily, 30-60 minutes before breakfast. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed because this drug can be habit forming. Also, if used for a longer period of time, do not suddenly stop this medication without first consulting your doctor. This medication is usually taken for 8 to 12 weeks.

SIDE EFFECTS: Side effects, which may go away during usage, include restlessness, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, or dry mouth. If you experience side effects that continue or are annoying or troubling, consult with your doctor. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, or pharmacist.

IS TENUATE SAFE: Tenuate may impair your ability to concentrate, remember, or pay attention to important things. Everyday things such as driving a car, using the can opener, and just being physically and mentally coordinated might seem like a challenge. Do not do anything important or engage in any potentially hazardous activities until you are familiar with the drug.

Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. For women: this medicine is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tenuate should not be used while taking (or less than 14 days after taking) a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. This could result in extreme high blood pressure and other side effects.

It has been reported that tricyclic antidepressants enhance amphetamine effects. Using these medications with diethylpropion may cause high blood pressure or irregular heartbeat and may decrease the effects of blood-pressure lowering medications (guanethidine).

Tenuate may alter the effects of diabetic medication. Tenuate and a barbiturate taken together may antagonize the effects of both drugs. Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) decreases Tenuate elimination. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) increases Tenuate elimination.

The safety and efficacy of combined Tenuate with SSRI's and various other psychotherapeutic agents has not been established.

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include restlessness, fever, fast breathing, dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, panic or paranoid, drowsiness, convulsions, unconsciousness, unusually fast or slow heart beat, headache, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, pale or flushing, chest pain, sweating, muscle weakness, agitation, large pupils, or delusions.

WHAT IF YOU MISS A DOSE: If you miss a dose of Tenuate, take it as soon as possible. If it is after 4 pm, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

NOTES: Do not exceed the recommended dose or take this medicine for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor. Exceeding the recommended dose or taking this medicine for longer than prescribed may cause serious side effects. Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Don't share this medication with others.

STORAGE: Store it at room temperature away from heat, light and moisture. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.
